Why the Holy Spirit Came

Why the Holy Spirit Came
(Pentecost Sunday)

The Holy Spirit enables us to live for Christ and make the Gospel known to the world.

We Are The Temple

1Co 6:19 What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own?

…….First of all, you were created for this. Being filled and full of the Spirit was the purpose if your creation. It is for every single person who has ever taken a breath.
Giving God full authority over your life is the first step in being baptized by his indwelling Spirit.

The Holy Spirit Promised

John 14:15 If ye love me, keep my commandments.
…….For those who wonder if God requires structure in a person’s life, here is the answer. We can’t have one without the other, first keep his commandments, and then he will pray the Father.
So many of us expect to be rewarded for “this” without having to do “that”.
16 And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever;

…….If you are born again, you are ready to receive. There is no way of “fixing up our flesh” so we can prepare for the Holy Spirit to come in. I don’t disagree with needing to get rid of things in life that hinder our walk, but a Christian does that already.
We can’t practice having the fruit of the Spirit, and then have him come in. The facade only gets in the way of the work of the Spirit.
…….Stop holding on to what you can do.
We have to let go of our abilities and let him take control. Only then will it be easy to give up the “stuff” that the flesh desires.

The Holy Spirit Promised to Believers

John 14:17 Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.
…….The Comforter is the Spirit of Christ.
18 I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you.

…….This is Jesus’ promise that he desires every individual to have the Spirit. He is more than a tongue, the tounge is simply evidence. He is comfort for every obstacle in life.
He is fruit for every situation that comes about. If you have anger, he is temperance. If you feel sad, he is joy. If you feel anxious, he is peace. If you need patience, he is long-suffering. If you are over zealous, he is gentleness. If you are negative, he is goodness. If you are in doubt, he is Faith. If you need humility, he is meekness. If you need Love, he is the author and perfector of it.
He is the ultimate Comforter and everything a Christian needs.

The Spirit Received by Believers

Acts 2
1 And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place.

…….This may be the absolutely most missed scripture concerning “receiving the Holy Spirit”. The Holy Spirit will not initiate or remain in a life who is not willing to be in full submission to his/her Spiritual authority.

2 And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting.

…….The two distinct Baptism’s

Acts 8:
14 Now when the apostles which were at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the word of God, they sent unto them Peter and John:
15 Who, when they were come down, prayed for them, that they might receive the Holy Ghost:
16 (For as yet he was fallen upon none of them: only they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.)
Vs 16 & 17 explain that there is a difference in the baptism of Jesus Christ which occurs at salvation, and the baptism of the Holy Ghost which occurs at the time given by His Spirit.
17 Then laid they their hands on them, and they received the Holy Ghost.

The Spirit Is Helper

John 14:
26 But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.

…….The Holy Ghost is not only a helper but in helping is our teacher. If we want to know more, he will not leave you empty.
If you have a hard time understanding, let the Holy Spirit fill you.

The Spirit is Guide

John 16:
12 I have yet many things to say unto you, but ye cannot bear them now.
13 Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: “for he shall not speak of himself”; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come.

…….The Holy Spirit doesn’t bring attention to himself but points the attention strictly to Christ and his Gospel.

14 “He shall glorify me”: for he shall receive of mine, and shall shew it unto you.

The Spirit is Intercessor

Romans 8:
26 Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.
27 And he that searcheth the hearts knoweth what is the mind of the Spirit, because he maketh intercession for the saints according to the will of God.

The Holy Spirit Testifies of Christ

John 15:
26 But when the Comforter is come, whom I will send unto you from the Father, even the Spirit of truth, which proceedeth from the Father, he shall testify of me:
27 And ye also shall bear witness, because ye have been with me from the beginning.

The Holy Spirit Convicts and Convinces

John 16:
7 Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you.
8 And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment:
9 Of sin, because they believe not on me;
10 Of righteousness, because I go to my Father, and ye see me no more;
11 Of judgment, because the prince of this world is judged.
